Inaugural IMRC attracts 22 elite mining rescue teams

Strengthening global mining safety standards is key in achieving accident free target of three million tonnes of copper per annum by 2031,Mines and Mineral Development Minister Paul Kabuswe has said as the country hosts inaugural International Mine Rescue Competition (IMRC).

The IMRC which is being cohosted by Mopani Copper Mines (MCM) and First Quantum Minerals (FQM)’s Kansanshi Mine has attracted 22 elite rescue teams from across the world.

Participating countries include India Poland, China, Cote d’Ivoire, Bukinafaso, Indonesia, Canada, Australia, Columbia with Zambia being represented by Lubambe Copper Mine,NFCA Chambishi Mine ,Konkola Copper Mine(KCM) and Mopani Copper Mine respectively.

Mines and Mineral Development Minister Paul Kabuswe described the event as landmark which is the first of its kind in Africa.

The event has brought together participants from countries including Canada, Australia, China, India, Burkina Faso, Colombia, and Poland, among others.

“The competition will provide a unique platform for knowledge exchange, skills demonstration, and collaboration in mine rescue and emergency response,” Mr Kabuswe said.

Speaking during the official opening at Garden Court Hotel in Kitwe on Sunday night,he said mining safety remains a top priority not only for Zambia but for the global mining community.

Mr Kabuswe said as mining operations expand and become more complex, there was an urgent need for countries to work together in enhancing safety protocols and preparedness.

“The importance of mine rescue teams cannot be overstated. These brave men and women stand as the last line of defense in times of crisis, and their readiness can mean the difference between life and death,” he said.

Mr Kabuswe pointed out that Zambia had made strides in improving mine safety through strengthened regulations, increased inspections, and investment in modern rescue technologies.

“Hosting such an international event demonstrates Zambia’s growing role as a key player in promoting safe and sustainable mining practices,” he said.

Speaking earlier, IMRB Secretary Treasure Erica Gallegos Arias noted that urged participating teams to show global mining rescue knowledge for accident free mining operations.

“Our purpose today transcends borders and cultures. Let us remember that the main purpose that unites us is to save lives,” Ms Arias said.

She reminded participants that the work of mine rescuing knows no boundaries and shohkd be powered by strategies and tactics.

“In every corner of the world where mining takes place, there is also the unwavering commitment of human beings who with courage and dedication are ready to act when they are most needed,”she added.

Kansanshi Mining Plc General Manager Meiring Burger in a speech read for him by Kansanshi Mine Tailings Facility Storage Manager said FQM was committed to providing a platform for a successful competition.

And Mopani Chief Executive Officer Charles Sakanya said Mopani Central Training Centre which would co-host the events was well suited to hold the global gathering due to its robust infrastructure.
