Lumwana Mine to empower more people
Lumwana Mining Company has pledged to empower more people in North-Western Province through its robust corporate social responsibility programme.
The company has so far invested over US$13 million in the last 10 years.
Lumwana Mining Company Country Executive Director Mr Nathan Chishimba said in an interview that the mining firm, through its sustainability department wants to empower the local communities to start creating wealth for themselves.
Mr Chishimba said the mining firm does not want people to depend on handouts but to improve their livelihoods using the opportunities being created by the company.
He said the mine has initiated a number of programmes that include Nsabo Yetu programme which promotes wealth creation and skills development.
“We believe that we must make a difference in the community to the extent that even if the mine stopped operating tomorrow, the communities can still continue to grow and enjoy the benefits that have come with the mine.” Mr Chishimba said.
He said the mine has continued supporting various sectors such as education and health through infrastructure development.
